Fruit sorbet is one delicious and healthy low-calorie dessert that you can make at home easy! This grapefruit sorbet was made and enjoyed immediately… and below you’ll learn how to turn your favorite fruit juices and fruits into fruit sorbet.
We called sorbet like this: an amuse bouche to cleanse the mouth palate in between tastings when I planned events for Mediterranean cuisine DC restaurants and catering in hotels. Fruit sorbet was often the dessert option too.
…And it’s so easy to make at home in minutes.
So this is how to make the fruit sorbet that you can freeze and serve for dessert…
Again, it’s so easy if you have an ice cream machine that you can use this time as a sorbet machine.
For the grapefruit fruit sorbet, there was already the ingredients needed in the juice to simply add to the ice cream/sorbet making machine.
And then in 10-15 minutes, it was ready to enjoy!
But you may also want to make other sorbet flavors where you’ll need to adjust a little to get the same smooth sorbet consistency. Water being the star supporting ingredient. (If you added milk-based ingredients, you’d get sherbet).
Sometimes you won’t need water if water is already inherent in the juice. For the grapefruit juice, since water was part of the ingredients, I didn’t add any.
To check, look to see if the processed juice label says “from concentrate” that means most the water has been evaporated. And also look at the list of ingredients.
And I wanted to try fruit sorbet with other juices that needed some fun experimenting…
Like with this pomegranate fruit juice sorbet.

I especially wanted to use pomegranate juice to match a purple flower in the kitchen.
And for pomegranate fruit sorbet, since the POM juice is 100% made from pressed pomegranates that includes the arils, rinds, and pith that you find in other fruits like lychee, that you can pair with lemon juice or make a blueberry lemonade.
I added some water, about 2 tablespoons or so. Start with less.
Then starting the machine and churning it went. I watched and it looked off to a good start, so I didn’t need to add more water. As long as it starts to form a solid (like cranberry sauce), you’re in good shape.
It it already has water like the grapefruit juice, then it will make more of a slushie sorbet texture. it probably had a little too much water inherent in the purchased juice, but worked fine.
And you’ll be able to see if you need more water. I may have added a little more than needed. Water helps the consistency, but also…
When it freezes, water will help the tiny ice form for the classic sorbet texture when in the freezer, where it becomes a frozen desert. And then no longer just an amuse bouche refresher! 😋
You can als0 make homemade fruit juices for your fruit sorbet (with no added sugar). Like a fresh grapefruit juice.
You can make fruit juices so easy with an easy blender like a Magic Bullet where you can take your favorite fruits and berries like blueberry, blackberry, or raspberry, and add some lime juice. Or strawberry and lemon juice. Or cranberry and orange juice. Or your favorite other fruits and water.
Apples, bananas, oranges… oh my!
Oh, and don’t forget your favorite tropical fruits to make a tropical juice like homemade guava juice or mango juice.
Pulse and blend. And then add to your sorbet machine for delightful fruit sorbet.

- 1 ice cream/sorbet machine

- 8 oz fruit juice
Instructions
- Check if water is in the fruit juice you're using for your sorbet. If no significant water then add a small amount to your sorbet (ice cream) maker. This will help form tiny ice form for the sorbet when freezing.
- Turn machine on and churn until the juice liquid turns into a fully solid and smooth consistency, more like a slushie or cranberry sauce that will both work.
- Enjoy a soft sorbet, or scoop into a freezing vessel and freeze for at least 20 minutes before serving for the first time for a traditional cold sorbet.
