Spice Cracker – Turmeric Healthy Homemade

Spice cracker is a way to describe golden savory crackers that you can make at home with the variety of seasonings available. It’s all in the spices (and bake).

The taste remind me of the fishy shaped crackers can get at the store that all ages love. I remember seeing you could eat 55 crackers and it was low-fat.

And these dozens of crackers are all hand stamped out the size of a nickel.

And they are turmeric spice healthy good 🧡(that add the unique turmeric taste).

Adding these spices make this an unforgettable bread-like spice cracker:

Turmeric – 1 Tbsp or 1-1/2 tsp with plus 1-1/2 tsp paprika.

This gives the golden orange color.

Celery Seed (or Old Bay spice blend that has celery seed) – is one you may not know much about. In the Old Bay spice blend, you get a distinct slight bitter, unique savory flavor that pairs well with balancing salt.

And celery seed is an antioxidant like many plant-based foods.

Like most seeds, it has minerals and vitamins so it’s a healthy add.

It’s used like a spice in the kitchen. It’s actually a fruit that comes from wild celery.

Definitely don’t skip this spice in your crackers if you want them to taste like nostalgic golden crackers you grew up with.

Garlic Powder – is one where you want to make sure the seasoning is fresh, so you get the punchy tastes.

A fresh version has a pungent (not mild) garlic aroma when you open the spice.

Alternatively you can use one of my favorite spice blends: Old Bay. They have the seasoning taste good for seafood and crackers.

Then after you’ve gathered your dry ingredients, combine the spices with 1 cup whole wheat flour (or regular flour) and add 1/2 cup water until the dough comes together. It should be a sticky dough.

Then roll out with some plastic wrap on top to separate the roller from the sticky dough. Roll out thin to about 1/4″.

This should make anywhere from 50-100 small (1″) spice crackers good for soups (another great supermarket cracker!) and for healthier snacking!

Use a silicone (or Silpat) mat to make each artisanal spice cracker easy to pick up after baked. These buttons are popping in the oven soon…

And in case you’re wondering why whole wheat flour…

The gluten (whole wheat) flour offers additional B-vitamin and fiber nutrition compared to all-purpose flour.

It’s in the “whole” name that describes that the bran and germ parts are not stripped, so it’s minimally processed (vs white flours).

Other wheat flours (that are no longer pure whole wheat) would work too.

An ancient wheat like einkorn (gluten flour) is my favorite.

And if you want less of a bread-y cracker, then gluten-free flours will work for a different texture.  You can even make this cracker with very little flour like a  za’atar cracker with mostly spices and seed ingredients (…sound familiar?)

With a more crunchy style spice cracker, simply add a little more water and less flour. Before baking, it will look more like a flour paste.

…It doesn’t get more wholesome than this. The one thing that may be a little trickier is stamping out little button shapes (with a paste dough). You could use a pizza roller and cut strips or small squares as a rustic cut alternative.

But the round ones are cute too with a dash of paprika.
