Grapefruit Brûlée – Breakfast Bowl

Grapefruit brûlée is a delightful add to a brunch table. I was at a farm table restaurant brunch years ago, and the most elevated memorable item was the bruleed grapefruit.

It wasn’t just juicy when you cut into the spoon that looked like a shovel and had unique spikes like a serrated knife. As plump juicy as this one that I bruleed in my home oven. And you can make this too! It’s timeless…

As in the oven, the flat half grapefruit pulp exterior puffs up. And that brings out the juices as you dive in.

It’s also elevated without any extra calories. Grapefruits are loaded with Vitamin C and underrated as a citrus (where oranges, lemons, and lime dominate dishes).

But a grapefruit bowl makes for a great amuse bouche to whet your appetite… and presentation. And that’s what my former catering-self relishes.

Grapefruits I think are underrated fruits, hiding in the citrus sections near oranges. But grapefruits are so pretty on the outside and when you cut in and taste they are sweet, tart, and sometimes grapefruit-y bitter. Red grapefruits are all sweet with no bitter notes, like this one I used from Florida with a 4281 PLU.

Not to mention the pretty color. They remind me of guava juice that’s an inspiring pretty in pink color. But grapefruits have beautiful interiors and exteriors. Whether it’s a pink, red, yellow, or tie-dye shades in between.

The appealing exterior (easy to peel into) makes for a one-of-a-kind bowl that you can pretty serve the grapefruit in on your table.

And with their thick skin (we all wish we had), they can stand up to the heat of the oven.

You can make a grapefruit brûlée for your special occasions, and those you share with will think you’ve got cheff-y kitchen skills.

That’s right, you can make this straight from your kitchen’s oven! And add any accoutrements like I did with Greek yogurt ontop as a point of interest. No sugar needed to brown or give a “caramelized” effect.

Can’t wait to dive into the grapefruit pulp. And believe me it will be an elevated juice experience! Use a pointy spoon if you have one or the special grapefruit spoon you likely don’t have. 😊

Or you can cut each wedge section with a serrated knife (that looks like Trivial Pursuit game board and pieces). Then like a game, go around the pith until the grapefruit is loose. This is a GREAT fruit.

And what a great way to enjoy your grapefruit juice in a bowl!

And if you love this idea, can try with oranges, and other thicker skin fruits. Why not?
