Blue Frosting – For Healthy Cake That’s Surprisingly Good

Blue frosting can be healthy and tasty, with natural sea colors. And this is made from a water plant-based protein and healthy Greek yogurt.

You can make the spectrum of blue shade colors from spirulina blue powder, that’s the algae wave of the future.

I grew up on a lake where algae was the backdrop (and far from edible back then).

…So when I first heard about the blue powder, I thought it would have a beyond fishy aquatic taste that still fills my memories.

But to my happy surprise (!), the algae powder was almost taste-less which is good news today. Mix and add in other desired healthy flavors (e.g. fruit, extracts, and honey) that come through and can shine with the  healthy blue hue.

The frosting can turnout to be whatever blue shade you can dream up 💭… from the pure dark blue sea colors, to lighter blue sky colors and medium blue Blue Clues colors. 🩵

And to make it even more color palate interesting, and mouth palate tasty, you can add a little healthy green Pandan gel to make aqua blue-green Caribbean Sea colors (or Tiffany blue colors). Pandan is a natural plant-based ingredient that can be purchased as a gel. It has a vanilla earthy taste so it goes great in desserts, and anything you’d think of adding a ‘lil vanilla extract in.

Recipe is below on how to make the healthy blue frosting that’s delicious for your desserts… (and instead of using powdered sugar or cream cheese frostings and artificial food colorings that don’t belong on a healthy food list).

That’s so satisfying to know you can use natural ingredients to get the exact bluish shade color. It’s as fun as looking at, mixing, and selecting paint chips for your home room walls.

It’s an experience where we all have a happy color preference for our moods.

…That we can change by mixing the blue and green with pure white (Greek yogurt), that has all the colors of the rainbow.

Fittingly, the blue frosting is protein and probiotic healthy that belongs with other eat-from-the-rainbow foods. 🌈

Blue Frosting - For Healthy Cake

This is a healthy frosting with blue spirulina that's high in protein and nutrients.

Ingredients

  • Greek yogurt thicker, plain
  • blue spirulina powder
  • Pandan gel

Instructions

  • Add a small amount of blue spirulina powder in a bowl. Add medium (plain yogurt or Greek yogurt) and mix with a spoon to get a light blue. If the shade hue is too light, then add more powder.
  • To make a turquoise or blue-green, add a drop of Pandan gel. Add additional drops if desired.

Notes

A drop or two of of Pandan gel adds a bit of green. Use a toothpick to dab into the gel or place the drops into a separate bowl first. For the blue spirulina powder, you won't need much to make a light blue with a white medium like yogurt or Greek yogurt.
